How to reset a Sengled Wi-Fi bulb (and what a reset does)
From Tomorrowish, the makers of Relight, an independent iPhone app for Sengled Wi-Fi bulbs. Every fix on this page works without it. Checked November 2, 2026.
First, the warning from Sengled's own help pages: once a Sengled device is reset, "the only thing left to do is to add it back like a new device." A Wi-Fi bulb forgets your Wi-Fi network. Until 2025 you re-added it in the Sengled Home app. Now that the app's sign-in fails for many people, a reset can turn a working bulb into one with no easy way back. So if the bulb still turns on and still shows up on your network, don't reset it; control it as it is (how).
The reset (Wi-Fi bulbs, code starting with W)
- Use a fixture with a plain on/off switch. Sengled says its smart bulbs aren't meant for dimmers, 3-way lamps, ceiling fan fixtures or enclosed fixtures.
- Start with the light on.
- Switch it off and on 5 times quickly, about a second each way. Off then on counts as one. End with it on.
- If it worked, the bulb flashes 3 times, then blinks twice. It is now in setup mode and broadcasts its
own Wi-Fi network, named like
Sengled_Wi-Fi Bulb_XXXXXX.
Nothing happened? Wait ten seconds and try again a little faster; slow flips often don't count. SengledTools' advice is to "flick the power switch rapidly 5+ times until the bulb flashes." Zigbee bulbs (code E) are different: Sengled says at least 10 very quick flips, and they flash five times.
What a reset does to pairing
- It erases the Wi-Fi name and password. The bulb leaves your network and opens its own setup network instead.
- It doesn't fix anything on Sengled's side. A reset bulb still needs an app to set it up again, and the Sengled app's setup needs a working account.
- Setting a reset bulb up without the Sengled app is possible but rarely smooth. SengledTools has a setup wizard that runs on a computer, joins the bulb's setup network and hands it your Wi-Fi details. Owners report it hanging at the verification step (one needed "about 20 tries for each lightbulb"), and one found that two W12-N15 bulbs that had never been activated forgot the Wi-Fi again after a power cut.
When a reset is still worth it
- You changed your router or Wi-Fi password, so the bulb is off your network anyway.
- You moved, or bought the bulb second-hand.
- The bulb is on your network but answers nothing, and a plain power cycle (off for ten seconds, then on) didn't help.
In those cases, have your setup tool open before you flip the switch, and use your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network: Sengled Wi-Fi bulbs can't join a 5 GHz one.
Questions
How do you reset a Sengled Wi-Fi bulb?
Start with it on, then switch it off and on 5 times quickly, ending on. It flashes 3 times and blinks twice when it is in setup mode.
Will resetting my bulb fix the Sengled app?
No. The app's sign-in problems are on Sengled's servers. A reset only takes the bulb off your Wi-Fi.
Can I set up a reset Sengled bulb without the Sengled app?
Yes, with a tool that does the same setup, such as the SengledTools wizard on a computer. Expect retries; owners report it can take several attempts.
Why doesn't my Sengled bulb flash after 5 flips?
Flip faster, about a second each way, on a plain switch, starting and ending on. If it is a Zigbee bulb (code starts with E) it needs at least 10 flips.
