Phomemo printing blurry QR codes or photos: how to get them sharp
From Tomorrowish, the makers of Paperpaw, an independent app for these printers. Every fix on this page works without it. Checked November 2, 2026.
A pocket thermal printer draws everything with tiny dots. The M110 prints at 203 dpi, which is about 8 dots per millimetre; the M02 Pro prints at 300 dpi. That is plenty for text, but a QR code or photo has to fit into that grid, and when the details are smaller than a few dots they smear together.
QR codes that won't scan
- Print it bigger. A QR code is a grid of squares (called modules). The smallest QR code is 21 × 21 modules, and a long link can need 57 × 57 or more. Squeeze that into 2 cm on a 203 dpi printer and each square gets only two or three dots, so one stray dot can break it. Make the code as wide as the paper allows.
- Use a shorter link. Every QR version adds 4 modules per side, and more text means a higher version. A short link makes a simpler code with bigger squares at the same size.
- Keep the white border. The QR standard needs a clear margin four squares wide on every side. If you crop the code tight or put a frame right against it, phones may not read it.
- Check darkness both ways. Too light and squares break up; too dark and they run together. Print one, scan it, and adjust the density a step.
Blurry or grainy photos
Phomemo's FAQ lists the usual causes of blurry prints: low battery, density too low, a dirty print head and a poor source image. Its fixes, in order:
- Charge the printer (under 30%, charge for about 3 hours).
- Raise the print density in the app.
- Wipe the print head, the thin black line under the lid, with an alcohol pad.
- Try another roll; damp paper prints badly.
- Start from a sharper photo. Phomemo notes that low-quality images, especially with a white background, print with spots and lines.
Photos with strong contrast (a face against a plain wall, a pet on a light floor) come out far better than dark, busy scenes, because the printer can only make black dots, not grey ones.
Questions
Why won't the QR code from my Phomemo scan?
It is usually too small for the printer's dots. Print it bigger, use a shorter link, keep a white margin four squares wide around it, and adjust the darkness.
What resolution do Phomemo mini printers print at?
Phomemo lists the M110 at 203 dpi, about 8 dots per millimetre, and the M02 Pro at 300 dpi.
How do I stop Phomemo photos printing blurry?
Charge the printer, raise the print density, clean the print head with an alcohol pad, try another roll, and use a sharp, high-contrast photo.
