Phomemo printing blank or faded: paper side, darkness and battery
From Tomorrowish, the makers of Paperpaw, an independent app for these printers. Every fix on this page works without it. Checked November 2, 2026.
A Phomemo printer has no ink. It heats spots on special paper and those spots turn black. So when nothing comes out, or it comes out pale, the cause is almost always one of four things: the paper, the darkness setting, the battery or the print head.
Completely blank: the paper is in upside down
Thermal paper only works on one side. Scratch the paper with a fingernail: the side that leaves a dark mark is the printing side, and it has to face the print head. Phomemo's help center gives this exact test. If neither side marks, it isn't thermal paper at all and will never print.
Then check the printer on its own: with it switched on, press the power button twice to print the self-test page. If the test page prints but your picture doesn't, the problem is in the app, not the printer.
Faint or patchy: four things to try
- Charge it. A low battery prints light. Phomemo's FAQ suggests charging for about 3 hours if the battery is under 30%, then printing again. A flashing red light means low battery.
- Turn up the density. Both the Phomemo app and Print Master have a print density (darkness) setting. Phomemo's own fix for blurry, light prints is to raise it a step at a time.
- Clean the print head. Open the lid and gently wipe the thin dark line (the head) with an alcohol wipe or cotton pad, let it dry, and print again. Sticker paper can leave glue on it.
- Try another roll. Paper that got damp prints badly; Phomemo suggests testing a different roll.
Prints that fade later
Thermal prints don't last forever. Phomemo's own figures for its paper: plain paper keeps the image for up to 7 or 10 years, coloured paper up to 5, sticker paper up to 10, depending on the roll. Heat, sunlight and rubbing make them fade faster; Phomemo's paper listings say to keep prints away from high temperature and direct sunlight and not to let them rub for long. Keep journal pages and labels you care about out of the sun and away from warm spots.
Questions
Why is my Phomemo printing blank paper?
The roll is usually in the wrong way round. Scratch the paper: the side that marks must face the print head. If neither side marks, it is not thermal paper.
How do I make Phomemo prints darker?
Charge the printer, raise the print density in the app a step at a time, and clean the print head with an alcohol wipe.
Why are my Print Master labels faded?
The same causes apply to the M110 family: low battery, density set too low, a dirty print head or damp labels.
How long do Phomemo prints last?
Phomemo rates its plain paper at up to 7 or 10 years, coloured paper up to 5 and sticker paper up to 10. Heat and sunlight shorten that.
